SHORT STORY

Her bloodied eyes, broken nose, and swollen lips, told the story. Or did it? She stood at the doorway, elbow bracing against the wall, fingers hanging over her tousled hair.  She has had enough. Ten years of marriage to top executive was a brilliant idea. He was the créme de la créme in his profession. He dressed the part; always immaculately attired and drove a lamborghini to work. He was a member of exclusive clubs, dined at coveted star restaurants, known for their culinary excellence and affluent ambience. She foresaw a life that would be the envy of her friends.
Yet, the journey  was a rollercoaster. She didn't expect a starry-eyed relationship as she saw her parents survive and grew a 40-year marriage until her dad died. Her mom followed two years later. She witnessed where her mom irked her dad to the point where he became withdrawn and would seek solace in his garage where he would pretend to be busy fixing something. Most times he just fiddled with some tool or gadget. Similarly, her mom fought hard to get her dad away from the TV when his favorite sport was on. He always promised her just five minutes more which often turned into an hour. But by evening they were the best pals and behaved as if nothing challenging happened between them whilst together.
Her husband was not so much in control of his temper. He flew into a rage for the most things he considered out of place. She bore the bricks on her chest and sometimes on her head. A few times there was a huge rock thrown in her direction. She rallied until he became physical. The first incident was a shove against a wall. She was shocked. He quickly apologized and pleaded for forgiveness. She did.
One Sunday morning after he came home late from a bar, he attacked her. she didn't back down this time. He threw punches and wild swings, a few connected and some missed. She called upon her karate skills which she has acquired in her teen years. There were still there. She rained on some chops, double parallel punches, double scissors hits, and U-shaped double shots. He fell from the barrage and passed out. She called 911 and waited at the door for their arrival © Wallace Paul. June 2025.

The Drifters
So like many groups The Drifters has a change. And the man who then took center stage in the group was Ben E. King.
With one of the most melodious voices in the business, his ability to bend notes, ad lid, and woo, won the hearts of millions.
In this issue we'll feature a song where Ben E. King does the lead , "Save the Last Dance For Me"
The back end to the lyrics of this song is that writer, Jerome Solen Felder (Pomus Doc) was struck by polio in his youth, and relied on his crutches to stand and walk as a young man, and was later confined to a wheelchair. Despite his infirmity and being Jewish, he forged a substantial career as an R&B singer performing in predominantly African-American clubs in New York city in the 1940 and 50s. He cut about 40 songs for Indie labels.
He married a tall and stunning actress -Willi Burke. A few year later he came across an invitation to their wedding and it evoked the memory of his bride dancing with his brother, while he sat in his wheelchair. He started writing the song at the back of the invitation. And we have come to enjoy this song which became The Drifters biggest hit. Here are the lyrics.
Save The Last Dance for Me

You can dance
Every dance with guy
Who gives you the eye
Let him hold you tight

You can smile
Every smile for the man
Who held your hand
'Neath the pale moonlight

But don't forget who's taking you home
And in whose arms you're gonna be
So darlin'
Save the last dance for me, mmm

Oh, I know (Oh, I know)
That the music's fine
Like sparkling wine
Go and have your fun

Laugh and sing (Yes, I know)
But while we're apart
Don't give your heart
To anyone

But don't forget who's taking you home
And in whose arms you're gonna be
So darlin'
Save the last dance for me

Baby don't you know I love you so?
Can't you feel it when we touch?
I will never, never let you go
I love you, oh, so much

You can dance (You can dance)
Go and carry on
Till the night is gone
And it's time to go

If he asks (you can dance)
If you're all alone
Can he take you home
You must tell him no

'Cause don't forget who's taking you home
And in whose arms you're gonna be
So darlin'
Save the last dance for me

Repeat chorus

For a love that wouldn't bloom

Modern Relationships

Over the years there have been many books and articles, along with televisions shows, and podcasts seeking to explain one of the greatest challenges facing us--how to get along. Apart from focusing on social interactions, the most crucial seems to be couple relations.
Yes, there are millions of experts, from religious leaders to psychologists, to self-proclaimed gurus who have the perfect solutions. Yet still we find that this union, while an important part of society's stabilization is under pressure. Or is it?
From as far back as recorded history goes marriage has been the backbone of human survival as a species. In his book "Wired for Love," author Stan Tatkin says, "Couplehood has been fro the dawn of  human history, to the primary social structure, of our species, giving rise to larger structures of family, community, society, culture, and civilization. He further states that," What happens in the  home determines what happens in the society, and given the perennial presence of conflict and violence between partners and among groups and cultures, we can conclude that (what ever help couples get to make things work has not been very helpful--paraphrase. The author believes that if we were to look at it from a logical premise, that healthy couples are essential to a healthy society then, "helping couples should be elevated from a romantic sentiment-- and a professional career to a primary societal value."
In as much as there are several publications advising couples on how to navigate their relationships, the rate of failure keeps climbing.

Now that summer starts this month and many garden experts would be tending their garden, here are some of the plants you'll see blooming.
Picture
Sunflowers: These come in different varieties. Young sunflowers are heliotropic, meaning that they turn to follow the movement of the Sun across the sky from east to west and turn back towards the east at nights. At maturity they begin to only face the east.
Picture
Zinnias : Also come in different varieties.
A fast -growing annual season flower that blooms vibrantly from summer until frost. They thrive in full sunlight and prefer nutrient-rich well draining soil

Picture
Dahlias: Their varieties are numerous. Often gets mistaken for other species of flowers. Often described as a flower with an attitude of dignity, as it holds its colorful bloom aloof  with noble elegance.
Picture
Marigolds: French marigolds have different shades of orange and yellow. They'll grow 12 to 14 feet. They need light to germinate so press them into the soil rather than covering them.
Picture
These plants fall into two categories:
1. Grandiflora
2. Multiflora.
Grandiflora have larger flowers. They are great for hanging basket or containers
Multiflora varieties produce smaller flowers, though they come in thicker . These are good for flower beds because they handle wet weather better than their other variety.

Picture
Salvias: Red salvia flowers form a striking accent when massed together as bedding plants, when lined up in a row as edging plants or used as a vertical accent in a container. A native of Brazil, the plant is a perennial but often grown as an annual in temperate zone.
Picture
Geraniums: There are more than 300 species of this plant. So take your pick and enjoy caring for them. These plants can be annual or seasonal.

5. Watch the Weather

Limit caffeine-containing and alcohol beverages since they can dehydrate you.

7. Plan for Your Period

Hormones can wreak havoc on your head. It is common to get migraines with your period. Some women get them when they ovulate and during menopause, too. Have a pain-relief plan in place when you know your hormones will be in flux.

Sergio Seriani became an indentured servant in a German factory during World War 11.
Living conditions were abysmal, food was very scarce. From the few anecdotes that Sergio told his family, the laborers would dig up the potatoes that others had planted out at night from the fields inside the plant, eat them and put the stems and leaves back onside the ground to make seem that the tuber was still there; they would eat even the peel. By Sergio's account he and other laborers would lick dew from the rocks in the morning to quench their thirst. Altogether during the time he spent there he lost over 55 lbs. from a healthy weight of 176 lbs to around 121 lbs. Eventually the Allied advanced all over Germany in April 1945 and freed the prisoners at Leuna Works.
