India is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country in the world, and the most populous. And from the time of its independence from the British, in 1947, India was regarded as the largest democracy in the world. It shares its borders with a number of countries on the continent. To the south is the Indian Ocean, the Arabian Sea, on the southwest, the Bay of Bengal on the southeast. Land borders are with Pakistan to the west, Nepal, China, and Bhutan to the north. Bangladesh and Myanmar are to the east. In the Indian Ocean, India is in the vicinity of Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Its Andaman and Nicobar islands share a maritime border with Thailand, Myanmar and Indonesia.
Modern Indians arrived on the Indian subcontinent from Africa around 55,000 years ago. Varying forms of isolation as hunter- gatherers, made the region diverse, second only to Africa in human genetic diversity. 9,000 years ago on the subcontinent, people began to live a more settled life, mainly on the western margin of the Indus river basin. By 1200 BCE, an archaic form of Sanskrit, an Indo-European language had diffused into India from the northwest. The Dravidian languages were in much evidence in the northern and western regions of the country.
In the early medieval era, Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and Zoroastrianism became established on the southern and western coasts of India. The Vijayanagara Empire created a long-lasting Hindu culture in south India. The Punjab and Sikhs also became a part of the religious and political mix of this diverse country. The British were very much in the mix as the Crown rule began in 1858. This would come to an end when India gained independence in 1947,
After all of the changes, India has been a federal republic since, 1950. It is a pluralistic, multi-ethnic, multilingual society. There is a president, a prime minister, and chief justice. In the legislature, there is the upper house and lower house. India's population is growing rapidly and currently stands in excess of 1.4 billion people. New Delhi, is the capital city with Mumbai being the largest. The official languages are Hindi and English.
If there is one thing that India is well known for is its participation or should I say it's immersion in the game of cricket. This sport is the second most popular in the world and to an extent owes its popularity to the millions of Indians who follow it with a passion.
India is second only to China as the largest cotton producers in the world. Petroleum products, gems and jewellery, iron and steel, form major parts of India's export trade. There is also the story of India turning out some of the top IT personnel who often work for big companies overseas. The country's current GDP stands at 14.269 trillion USD, ranking it the third highest in the world.
