So, in November of 1971 when many music lovers were enjoying the likes of The Jackson 5, Tony Orlando and Dawn, The Carpenters, The Who, and others; a strange sound hit the airways. It was the haunting riff of a brass ensemble. An organ hummed in the background. It was not a jazz band interspersing with the pop hits blaring out the various radio stations, but, a sound that you couldn't quite place into a category, until you heard a soft and mellow voice follow with the rhythmic tapping on the drums. And a guitar seemed to play rhythm and lead at the same time.
The singer continued to to woo, accompanied by gospel sounding harmony in the background. Many listeners were instantly sold , while others upon listening a few time were goners. And so a star was born- Al Green.
"Let's Stay Together" hit number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remained on the charts for 16 weeks. It topped the R&B charts for nine weeks. And was selected by the Library of Congress as a 2010 addition to the National Recording Registry.
Al Green was not finished with one song as he went on to produce a series of hits setting him up as a musical icon. I've made this selection from the repertoire of your consummate soul singer.
Look What You done for Me
Now that you're here with me,
I want to keep you free,
To do the things that you want to do,
The joy in life is loving you,
But now the day has come,
To let you know where I'm coming from.
The best of my years will go to you,
It's the only thing that I can do,
But these things don't come overnight,
Loving you baby, I think I'm right
Let me say before I forget,
Loving you baby, it's where it's at yeah
Ya baby, look what you done for me
Ya baby, you set my heart free
Oh but I feel, yeah, yeah, yeah, I feel yeah.
Sometimes I want to leave, but then I say
It wouldn't make sense at all
Anyway forgive me baby
If I do wrong
I haven't been a true man for so long
But let me say before I forget
Loving you baby, it's where it's at, yeah.
Ya baby, Look what you done for me
And that's a fact I say
Yeah, baby, look what you done for me
Yeah, yeah, you set my heart free
Oh, no matter
What you done for me
I got the feeling, that it's gonna
Yeah, look what you done for me
Baby, baby, you set my heart free.
