How do you spin your way into the hearts of music fans and have them trapped in your musical web forever? Then you continue to entrap new curious ones, and they are loving it too. Your answer- ask The Spinners.
This American R&B vocal group started spinning their silk in Ferndale, Michigan in 1954. They were not a huge success then but continued building the web. A few low charters was their trademark. But, this doesn't take away from the richly talented vocalizing that stood out in every recording.
Then the magic happened in 1972 when the group signed with Atlantic Records with writer Thom Bell in charge.
The web spun faster and The Spinners charted five top 100 singles and two top tens. They became one of the biggest soul groups in the 1970s. "I'll Be Around', "How Could I Let You Get Away", Could It Be I'm Falling In Love", "One Of A Kind Love Affair", "Mighty Love", and many more just kept making their presence felt on the charts. The rich musical accompaniment, strings and all blended with the smooth harmonizing made The Spinners stood out as a class act. Lead vocals by Bobby Smith and Phillip Wayne strike the listener to the core. Wayne's ad lib puts the spice to the cuisine.
We're look at "Mighty Love", in this issue. Released in 1974 and topping the charts. Listen for Wayne's ad lib at the last stage of the song.
Mighty Love
Once there was a boy and girl
Boy said, "I love so"
Girl said, "I'll never leave you."
They grew older and left each other
'Cause that's the way love goes
That's the way love goes
That's the way love goes
Then there's a time
Seems like you'll never find
Someone willing to love you
Keep on looking, you'll soon discover
A mighty love
Will sometimes make you weep and moan
A mighty love
You sit all day by the telephone
'Cause you're all alone
You need a mighty love, eh, hey
Some say that you're sure to find
True love and peace of mind
At the end of the rainbow
There's no sign in the sky to follow
"Cause that's the way goes
Baby, that's the way goes
And so there's a rhyme
That says life would soon be fine
Love is just what you make it
So keep on loving, you'll soon discover
A mighty love
Will sometimes make a, a weak man strong
A mighty love
Will sometimes make a, a rich man weak
And knock him off his feet
You'll have a mighty love
Mighty, mighty, mighty
Mighty, mighty, mighty, Jones
Coming down on me, yeah
Hey, hey, (mighty love)
I can feel world getting brighter
Brighter with your love
(Mighty love) You see baby
With a mighty love, you sometimes turn the world around.
(Mighty love) from all your love
You can turn the world around
Sometimes, yes you can.
(Mighty love) hey hey baby
Makes music have a happy, ha-ha sigh
Makes you move, makes you groove
You get the feeling that it's reeling come
Oh, oh, high high,
I'm gon, gon, gon, gon, gon, get your loving
(Mighty love) Oh, oh baby, got your love..
