In the competitive world of pop music we might find a few artist who, though talented, are not able to break through the barriers and unleash a series of hits. I think Luther Ingram is an example this. This R&B singer possessed the style that could evoke a hurt feeling, a longing to be with somebody and many more. Apart from singing, Luther was a writer and composed songs for other artists including the Staples Singers.
But it seemed like out of the blue he rocked us with his most famous hit, (If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want To Be Right" What is also fascinating about this song is its rich musical arrangements. The opening riff of the lead guitar, wakes you up. And the piano subtle play on accompanied with a soothing organ which picks up its rhythm to get apace with the song. The constant interplay of the lead guitar is enchanting. Then we hear a tuba and other brass adding a richer flavor. Great arrangements. The lyrics are considered controversial. So just take in the music if you agree.
If loving you is
wrong, I don't wanna be right
If being right
means
being without you
I'd rather live a wrong doing life
You mamma and
daddy say it's a
shame
It's downright
disgrace
Well long as I got you
by my side
I don't care what your
people say
Your friends tell you
it's no future
In loving a married man
Well long as I got you
by my side
I don't care what your
people say
If I can't see you
when I want
I'll see you when I can
If loving you is
wrong, I don't wanna right
If loving you is
wrong, I don't wanna be right
Am I wrong to fall so deeply with you
Knowing I got a wife
and two little children
depending on me too?
Am I wrong to hunger
for the gentleness of your touch
Knowing I got some else
at home to ease me just as much
And you wrong to give your love
to a married man'
And am I wrong for trying hold to
best thing I ever had
If loving you is wrong'
I don't wanna be right
If it means being without you
I don't wanna be right
If loving you is wrong
If it means sleeping at nights
I don't wanna be right
Oh, no
