"Black Mother" by Ernst Neuschul (1895-1968) A German-Czech painter. He was one of the best known painters of the New Objectivity period in the Weimar Republic.
This piece of work, humamises in a way an image that the Madonna can't. Here the mother looks defiantly to the viewer rather than skyward. She is watchful but resists fetishisation, instead imbuing the image with a quiet dignity as she focuses on nursing her child.
