Turkmenistan is a country in Central Asia bordered by Kazakhstan to the northwest, Uzbekistan to the north, east and northeast, Afghanistan to the southeast, Iran to the south and southwest, and the Caspian Sea to the west. This country's capital is, Ashgabat which is also it's largest city. It is one of six independent Turkic states. With a population of 6.5 million and 189,660 sq miles, Turkmenistan is the 35th largest country in  Asia. 
This Asian country has served as a thoroughfare for several empires throughout its history.  Historically inhabited by Indo-Iranians, followed by its annexation by the Achaemenid Empire of Ancient Iran. After centuries of turmoil, over a thousand years later, in the 8th century AD, Turkic speaking tribes moved from Mongolia to present-day Central Asia.   Turkmenistan was also  annexed by the Russian Empire in 1881 and figured prominently in the anti-Bolshevik movement in Central Asia. In 1925 Turkmenistan became a constituent of the Soviet Republic,the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic, but became independent in 1991 after the dissolution of the Soviet Republic. 
Turkmenistan is hardly a diverse country where 85. 6% of its population are Turkmens, 5.8% are Uzbeks, 5.1% Russians, 0.4% Kazakhs, and 3.1% others. Its major religion is Islam, with 93% of the population identifying as followers of this faith, with Christianity making out just 6.4% and 0. 6% as others. 
The form of  government in present day Turkmenistan can be described as unitary presidential republic under a totalitarian hereditary dictatorship . It has a President, Vice President, Chairman of the People's Council and Chairman of the Assembly.
This country possesses the world's fourth largest reserve of  natural gas and  substantial oil resources. China is the largest buyer of gas from Turkmenistan via three pipelines linking the two countries through Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. At present there  construction is apace for the  Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India, pipelines.
Turkmenistan's GDP stands at 126,132 billion USD.
