In ancient Rome, prostitution was 100% legal. There were no social repercussions for people who engaged in this practice, except that the lower class women had to dye their hair blond, a color that was associated with the Gauls and Barbarians. This change of hair color was to distinguish them from the good and honest Roman woman.
It's no secret that the Romans made heavy use of slavery. Slaves in Rome had no rights and lived miserable lives. One peculiar feature of this act was that fathers had the authority to sell or rent their sons into slavery, but it was only temporary. When the time was up, the buyer was expected to return the son in the same condition he bought him.
The Romans had conflicting rules regarding adultery, it depended on who was caught cheating. Unsurprisingly, husbands were free to do what they liked. They could have mistresses and prostitutes and no one would bat an eyelid.
On the other hand, if a husband found his wife in the throes of passion with another man, he was obligated to lock the two lovers in a room. He then had 20 hours to gather as many people as he could to act as witness. Once this was done, the husband had three further days to gather his evidence like who the lover was, the time the affair started, and other pertinent details. The husband then has to divorce his wife.
