A NEW PANDEMIC?
Well, with the current spate of the coronavirus sweeping across the world, no one is in the mood to deal with another virus that has the potential of wreaking havoc on lives and their economies,
Maybe that's an exaggeration. Maybe the situation is not that serious. But, according to news emanating out of China this week, their scientist have uncovered a new type of swine flu virus that is cause for serious concern. The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences report that the G4 shows " all the essential hallmarks of a candidate pandemic virus." However, the report added that G4 at the moment does not pose an immediate global threat.
"Our understanding of what is a potential pandemic influenza strain is limited," pointed out Dr. Angela Rasmussen, a virologist at Columbia University's public health school.
"Sure, this virus meets a lot of the the basic criteria but it's not for sure going to cause a hypothetical 2020 flu pandemic, or even be a dominant strain in humans."
