MORE KIDS MAKE ER VISITS FOR MENTAL HEALTH
There was a reported bump in children admission to hospitals for mental health issues. Researchers found that in the US between 20012 and 20016 overall admission shot up by 50%. "Prior to the study, we knew that an increasing number of children with mental health concerns were coming to the nation's pediatric emergency departments," says researcher, and resident physician with The Children's National Health System in Wassington,DC. Dr. Anna Abrams.
Dr. Abrams observed that the the research demonstrates that apart from a staggering increase in the rate of admission, there were racial and ethnic disparities in the trend. She is at this stage unclear on the reason for this phenonenon.
The team of researchers discovered that more than 17 million American Children struggle with some form of mental illness. They were able to sift through the data that had been collected by the Pediatric health Information System. Some of the mental health issues the team covered included: acute anxiety and delirium states; adjustment disorders and neurosis; alcohol abuse; drug abuse; bipolar disorder; childhood behavioral disorders; depression; impulse control and others.
Mental experts admit that they do have a huge challenge ahead of them but are determined to find a way to minimize this problem.
