Romania is the twelfth-largest country in Europe and the sixth most populous member state in the European Union. Its capital is Bucharest. The country has a rich history, having being occupied by various empires including the Roman, Ottoman, and Austria-Hungarian.
It gained its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1877 and fought along the Allied forces during World War 1. This country located at the crossroads of Central, Eastern and Southeast Europe. It borders Ukraine to the north and east, Hungary to the west, Serbia to the southwest, Bulgaria to the south, Moldova to the east, and the Black Sea to the southeast. Romania has a mainly continental climate, and an area of 92,046 square miles with population of 19 million.
The official language is Romanian and 89.3% of the population are of this ethnic group. The other groups are Hungarians-6%, 3.4% Roma, and 1.2% others. Christianity if the dominant religion with 84.7% of the population identifying with this religion. The country is governed by a multi-party democratic system. It is also a semi-presidential republic where executive powers are held by both the president and the government.
After the end of the Cold War, Romania developed closer ties with Western Europe and the United States, eventually joining NATO in 2004. The country applied in 1993 for membership in the European Union and became an Associated State of the EU in 1995, and an Acceding Country in 2004, and a full member in 2007.
During the 2000s, Romania had one of the highest economic growth rate in Europe, and has been referred at times as th "Tiger of Eastern Europe. Romania's GDP stands at 370 billion USD.
