The history of this country is quite interesting starting with the arrival of the Croats in the 6th century. This group were still part of Roman Illyria. Then by the 7th century they organized into two dutchies. By June 7, 879, Croatia was internationally recognized as an independent state under the reign of Duke Branimir Tomislav who became king in 975, elevating Croatia to the status of a Kingdom. During the succession crisis after the Trpimirovic dynasty ended, Croatia formed a union with Hungary in 1112. Faced with the Ottoman conquest in 1527, the Croatian parliament elected Ferdinand I of Austria to the throne. In 1918, the independent state of Croatia, Serbia, and Slovenia, merged into the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. But by 1941, the Nazi invasion saw Croatia installed as a puppet state of the invaders. However, by June, 1991, Croatia declared independence and successfully fought the four-year the War of independence. The official language is Croatian. And the main ethnic group in this country is the Croats, making up over 92 % of the population followed by Serbs 3.2% and others 5.2% . Christianity is the major religion here with 84.7 % while 6.4% having no religion, 2.3% others, and an unidentified group making up 3.9%.
