Officially the Italian Republic, is a country in Southern and Western Europe. Located in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. It consists of a peninsula delimited by the Alps and surrounded by several islands.
Italy shares its border with France, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia and the enclave microstates of the Vatican City and San Marino. It has a territorial exclave in Switzerland and an archipelago in the African Plate (Pelagie Islands).
With an area covering 115, 350 sq mi and a population of nearly 60 million, Italy is the tenth largest country in Europe and the third most populous member of the European Union. Rome, its largest city, is its capital. It's official language is Italian, with some minority, Albanian, Catalan, German, Greek, Slovene, Croatian, French and others.
Eighty-four percent of Italians identify as Christians, with 11.6% having no religion, 1.0% Islam and 3.0% other. This country is famously known as the birthplace of the Renaissance during the 1400s and 1500s. The Italian Renaissance marked the transition from the medieval period to the modern age. It was during this period that there was the fall of Constantinople and ushered in Greek scholars and texts to Italy, fuelling the recovery of Greco-Roman Humanism. Also emerging during this period was Italy's most famous artist, Leonardo Da Vinci and the famous Mona Lisa.
