Mozambique is a country located in Southeast Africa bordered by the Indian Ocean to the east, Tanzania to the north, Malawi and Zambia to the northwest, Zimbabwe to the west, and Eswanti and South Africa to the south and southwest.
Maputo, is the largest city in Mozambique is also its capital. This African country measures 309,500 square miles  has a population of nearly 35 million.
As early as the 4th century BC, Bantu-speaking people migrated to Mozambique. They established agricultural communities or societies based on herding cattle. And also brought with them the technology for smelting and smithing iron.
During the days of the conquest, by the French, Dutch, English, and Portuguese, Mozambique was not spared. In fact the country got its name from the Portuguese. It is believed that the name Mozambique is derived from an Arab trader Mussa Ben Mbiki who visited the island and continued to live there. So when the Portuguese explorers reached Mozambique in 1498, Arab trading settlement had existed along the coast and outlying for several centuries. The Portuguese trading ports and forts displaced the Arabs commercial and military  hegemony around 1500, becoming regular ports of call on the new European sea route to the east in the first step of colonisation. The Portuguese expansion was limited with individual settlers and officials who were granted extensive autonomy.  The Portuguese were subsequently able to wrest much of the coastal trade from Arab Muslims between 1500 and 1700. In this tussle, the Arab Muslims were able to seize a key foothold at Fort Jesus in 1698 on Mombasa island, now in Kenya. The pendulum swung to and fro resulting in an investment lag by the Portuguese who turned their focus to more lucrative trade with India, the Far East, and to the colonization of Brazil.
Mozambique endured a War of Independence between 1964-1975. This country became independent on June 25, 1975. Today the country is a unitary dominant party, and a semi-presidential republic under an authoritarian government.
