This marked the beginning of the Khmer Empire. After a period of Japanese occupation during the second World War, Cambodia gained independence in 1953. A period of history which the country would wish to forget was the rule by the Khmer Rouge regime from 1975 to 1979. During this time Pol Pot and his followers, were accused of genocide. That has since changed with Cambodia now having a unitary parliamentary constitutional monarch. This comprises, a monarch, prime minister, president of the senate, and president of the national assembly. The upper house is the senate while the lower house is the national assembly.
On the international scene Cambodia exported knit or crochet clothing accessories to the US$ totalling 6.4 billion which accounted for 30.9% of total export. They also exported electrical machinery, leather/animal gut materials, footwear, vehicles, furniture, bedding, and other products. Cambodia GDP stands at 28.4 billion USD.
