The Republic of Kazakhstan is a landlocked country mostly in Central Asia, with a part in Eastern Europe. On its borders are Russia to the north and west, China to the east, Kyrgyzstan to the southeast, Uzbekistan to the south , and Turkmenistan to the southwest, and a coastline along the Caspian Sea. Astana is the capital city, with Almaty being its largest. It's in this city that Kazakhstan has its leading cultural and commercial activities.
With an area spanning 1,052, 100 square miles, Kazakhstan is ranked the ninth largest country by area and also the largest landlocked country. With 20 million people, this country has one of the lowest population density in the world. In the mix are Ethnic Kazakhs who make up the the majority while Russians form a significant minority. There are also smaller groups who are Uzbeks, Ukrainians, Uyghur, German, Tatar, and others. The official languages are Kazakh and Russian.
Islam is the major religion in Kazakhstan, comprising of 63.9% of the population ,with Christianity making up the largest minority group with 17.2% of the population. 11% have no religion while 2.3% identify as Atheist and 0.2% as others.
Kazakhstan has been inhabited since the Paleolithic era. It has seen seen changes in its rule and cultural practices through the occupation of various nomadic Iranian people, Turkish nomads, and the subjugation under the Mongol Empire led by Genghis Khan. The Golden Horde lasted for a period but was superseded by Kazakh Khanate in the 15th century. They were later conquered by the Russian Empire . The Kazakhs finally dissolved itself from the Soviet Union(Russia) on December 16, 1991.
