Short Story
The married couple were both in bed at about 10pm, when the husband's cell phone lit up the dark room. He stretched his hand to the nightstand. It was a call from his ex lover with whom he cheated with while being married to his current wife. He had apologized to his wife about the affair. She was terribly hurt but agreed to attend couples' therapy with him to work out their marriage. He had no physical contact with his ex since the affair became known.
Though she promised to leave him alone, his ex still contacted him on his office number. He was a senior manager at his company. The calls, though sparse, always came under the pretext that she was seeking advice on a corporate matter. She was also a manager at her company. She told him she respected his decision to stay faithful to his wife and that she had since moved on with her life with her new lover.
With this call at home on his cell number, she complained that she was lonely. He left his wife in bed and walked to the hallway. She lamented that her new lover was a jerk and that she has since ditched him. He was livid and asked why she chose to call him at that hour when he was with his wife. She said she couldn't think of anyone else to call to express her feelings. He told her he had to go since he was at home with his wife and felt petrified that she was hurting from this call even though she didn't quite know who was calling. He abruptly ended the call.
Before he could get back to his bedroom, she called again. He was now teething with anger. He answered her and raised his voice calling her among other things a homewrecker. She asked him since when she became one and reminded him of the months of passionate lovemaking they had together. She also jogged his memory of the compliments he paid her among them being, she was the best lover he had ever had. He ended the call again.
She called again. His wife who was now up snatched the phone from him. She answered the call. The woman on the other end greeted with a polite, "Good night, I'm sorry to disturb you, but may I speak to your husband?" His wife who suspected something was amiss said, "No, you're not speaking to him, speak to me instead." His former paramour was livid. "Hey, hey, who do you think you are speaking to me like that?'
" I'm his wife!" boomed the furious spouse. In the background her husband was heard saying, "Leave that crazy woman alone."
"Oh, I'm crazy, you'll find out who is crazy. Her husband took the phone from his wife and ended the call once more. This time he turned off his phone completely. He apologized again to his wife for the spat and advised her he no longer is romantically connected to the caller. She jumped back into bed, turned her back to him and pulled the covers. © Wallace Paul July 2024.
