Mauritius
Mauritius is an island country in the Indian Ocean off the southeastern coast of  East Africa, and east of Madagascar.  The Republic of Mauritius includes the main island Mauritius as well as Rodrigue, Agalaéga, and St. Brandon. The main island, Mauritius where most of the population is concentrated hosts the largest city and capital, Port Louis. This small African country occupies an area of just 790 square miles and has an exclusive  economic zone spanning 670 square miles.
It is generally accepted that Arab sailors first discovered the uninhabited island around 975. Later in 1502 Portuguese sailors arrived and also made some claim to the island. This was followed by the Dutch who landed and took possession in 1598. A succession of conquest led to the French eventually taking possession in 1715. The United Kingdom also got into the fray when it seized the island from France in 1810. Under the treaty of Paris, four year later France ceded Mauritius and the British colony was named. The country finally gained independence from the United Kingdom in March of 1968.
The people of Mauritius are diverse in ethnicity, culture, language, and faith.  It is the only African country where Hinduism is the most practised religion. Indo-Mauritians make up the bulk of the 1,265m. population, with Creole, Sino-Mauritians, and Franco-Mauritians as the minorities. The official languages are English and French. However, Creole -Mauritian is spoken at home by 90% of the population. The main religion is Hinduism where 48% of the population identify with this faith,  Christianity follows with 32%, Islam 18%, and 1.6% others.
Mauritius is considered a high income economy and is ranked 13th out of 190 economies in terms of ease of doing business. It has built its success on a free market economy. Its political structure is a unitary parliamentary republic with a president, vice president, prime minister , and a speaker of the national assembly. Mauritius GDP stands at 14 billion USD.

Detecting Skin Cancer Early.
Picture
Skin cancers--including melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma--often start as changes to your skin. They can be new growths or precancerous lesions--changes that are not cancer but could become cancer overtime. An estimated 40% to 50% of fair-skinned people who live to be 65 will develop at least one skin cancer. Learn to spot the early warning signs.
Skin cancer can be cured if it if found and treated early.

Picture
Actinic Keratosis (Solar Keratosis)
These small, scaly patches are caused by too much sun, and commonly occur on the head, neck, and hands, but can be found elsewhere. They can be an early warning sign of skin cancer, but it's hard to tell whether a particular patch will continue to change overtime and become cancerous. Most do not, but doctors recommend early treatment to prevent the early development of squamous cell skin cancer. Fair skinned, blond, or red-- haired people, with blue or green eyes are more at risk.

Picture
Actinic Cheilitis (Farmer's Lip)
Related to actinic keratosis, actinic cheilitis is a precancerous condition that usually appear on the lower lips. Scaly patches or persistent rough patches on the lips may be present. Less common symptoms include swelling of the lips, loss of the sharp border between the lip and skin, and prominent lip lines.
Actinic cheilitis may evolve into evasive cell squamous carcinoma, if not treated.

Picture
Cutaneous Horns
The cutaneous horn appear as a funnel--shaped growth that extends from the base of the skin. It is composed of compacted keratin ( the same protein in nails). It is a specialized type of actinic keratosis.  The size and shape of the growth can vary considerably, but most are a few millimeters in length. Squamous cell carcinoma can be found at the base.It usually appear in fair-skinned elderly adults with a history of significant sun exposure.

When A Mole Is A Problem
A mole (nevus) is a benign growth of melanocytes, cells that give skin its color. Although few moles become cancer, abnormal or atypical moles can develop into melanoma over time. "Normal" moles can appear flat or raised or may begin flat and become raised overtime.  The surface is typically smooth. Moles that may have changed into skin cancer, are often irregularly shaped , contain many colors, and are larger than the size of a pencil eraser.
Most moles develop in youth or young adulthood. It is unusual to acquire a mole in the adult years.

Picture
Dysplastic Nevi (Atypical Moles)
Atypical moles are not cancer but can become cancer. They can be found in sun--exposed or sun --protected areas of the body. Atypical moles can be larger( one-quarter inch across or larger) and more irregular in shape, with notched or fading borders. They may be flat or raised or the surface smooth or rough. They are typically of mixed colors, including including pink, red , tan, and brown.
(We'll be back. Stay tuned)

Know Your ABCDEs
Most moles on a person's body look similar to one another. A mole or freckle that looks different from the others or that has the characteristics of ABCDEs of melanoma should be checked by a dermatologist. It could be cancerous. The ABCDEs are important characteristics to consider when examining your moles or other skin growths.
Picture
Your ABCDEs "A" is for Asymmetry.
Asymmetry means one half of the mole does match the other half. Normal moles are symmetrical. When checking your moles or freckles, draw an imaginary line through the middle and compare the two halves. If they do not look the same on both sides have it checked by a dermatologist.
Picture
Your ABCDEs. "B" is for Border
If the border of edges of the mole are ragged, blurred, or irregular, have it checked by a dermatologist. Melanoma lesions often have uneven borders.
Picture
Your ABCDEs  "C" is for Color
A mole that does not have the same throughout or that has shades of  tan, black, blue, white or red is suspicious. Normal moles are usually a single shade of color. A mole of many shades ot that has darkened or lightened should be checked by a doctor.
Picture
Your ABCDEs  "D" is for Diameter.
If you have a mole that appears to be getting larger or is changing color or size or is itching or bleeding, you should consider it suspicious.
Picture
Your ABCDEs  "E" is for Evolving.
A mole that is evolving--shrinking, growing larger, changing color, beginning to itch or bleed--should be checked. If a portion of the mole appears newly elevated, or raised from the skin, have it looked at by a doctor. Melanoma lesions often grow in size or change in height rapidly.
Picture
How are Moles Evaluated?
If you find a mole or spot that has any ABCDE's, of melanoma-- or one that's tender, oozing, scaly, doesn't heal or has redness or swelling beyond the mole-- see a doctor.  Your doctor may want to remove a tissue sample from the mole and biopsy it. If found to be cancerous, the entire mold and the rim of normal skin around it will be removed and the wound stitched closed.
Additional treatment may be needed.

A nurse caring for a man from Kentucky asked, "So how's your breakfast this morning?"
"It's very good except for the Kentucky Jelly. I can't seem to get used to the taste," the patient replied
The nurse asked to see the jelly and the man pointed at the bedside table.
Oh yeah, it's a foil packet labeled, "KY Jelly"

Thanksgiving Did Not originate in America.
Sorry to burst your bubble but Thanksgiving, the quintessential American holiday, is not actually American.
It was celebrated in Canada 40 years before we did in the US.

Picture
Data from US Poultry and Egg Association,
Americans consume more than 45 million turkeys on Thanksgiving compared to 22 million at Christmas and 19 on Easter.  Fully half of all whole turkey eaten in the US are consumed on Thanksgiving Day.
Only male turkeys--appropriately named gobblers --actually make the sound. Female turkeys cackle instead.

SHORT STORY

It was midnight, no moon was out. The stars disappeared from the skies.  Tombs creaked and rotting bodies emerged. Creatures started to crawl from the 500 year-old graveyard. No one was buried there for over fifty years. No humans passed within five miles of  this city of the dead, except a bent old man who resided in a cottage just 20 feet away.
A burst of lightning illuminated the sky but the creatures continued their march. Thunder roared and rumbled and crashed and banged. But the bodies marched on. Blood-red eyes scanned the landscape. They were all hungry. Decades of nothing to eat was too much for them. Pelting rain shot from the skies, but the corpses, some carrying their coffins on their shoulders, moved in unison. Some were headless, others grotesquely decomposed, while a few were enormously swollen. Yet still the creatures ambled, and dangled , and canted.

A man, who lived with his family heard the eerie sound of something in his yard. He opened his window.  A thousand pairs of bulging eyes glared at him. A few broken coffins crashed on the ground. Lightening flared across the skies. The army moved closer to his door. He quickly shut his window and ran back to his room . The father of four didn't want to awaken his family. But the graveyard army was hungry. So, they move closer to his door.
Some cried for food. The man knew he had nothing to give them. Only blood would satisfy them. They started banging on his door. His family awoke trembling.  They were aghast  by the rumble outside. The door collapsed. The man's wife was horrified. The children fainted from the sight of the ghastly spectacle.   The man quickly hurried and got some pumpkins he had stored for the season and threw it at the invaders. They backed off and scrambled for the vegetable. Crunching teeth and swishing gums consumed the gift. Even the headless got their share. © Wallace Paul, October 2024.

Rockwell
As if  he has to make his presence felt, Michael Jackson can be heard in the background in this song for Halloween. Rockwell is in fact the son of Motown founder Berry Gordy. So he was born Kennedy William Gordy. While not as scary Thriller, Rockwell is having some problems sorting out who is always watching him wherever he goes.

Somebody's Watching Me

Who's watching?
tell me who's
watching
Who's watching me

I'm just an average man with an average life
I work from nine to five, hey hell, I pay the price
All I want is to be left alone in my average home
But why do I always feel like, I'm in the Twilight Zone?

I always feel like somebody's watching me
And I have no privacy (oh oh oh oh)
I always feel like somebody's watching me
Tell me is it just a dream?

When I come home at night
I bang the door real tight
People call me on the phone, I'm trying to avoid
Or can the people on TV see me or am I just paranoid?

When I'm in the shower I'm afraid to wash my hair
'Cause I might open my eyes and find someone standing there!
People say I'm crazy just a little touched
But maybe showers remind me of Psych too much
That's why

I always feel like somebody's watching me
And I have no privacy (oh oh oh oh)
I always feel like somebody's watching me
Who's playing tricks on me? (Who's watching?)
Repeat chorus
I know what it feels like somebody's watching me..

Can I have my privacy?

Stop  playing tricks on me

I always feel like somebody's watching me..
