SHORT STORY
There was no light, even though the fluorescent lamps in the living room were on. She wore no glasses, neither was she visually impaired, yet still she saw no light. Her youthful appearance attracted many of the opposite sex with wide age ranges. The girl was just 24. She went out on several dates with escorts who seemed to drool over her. She was flattered. But now all of that was over.
Everything seemed to have come to a screeching halt. Her physical appearance mattered little to her now. She isolated herself and took only calls from her family and close trusted friends. Some consoled her and encouraged the girl to look at the positive side of things. She found none. Others blamed her suitors for taking advantage of her and prophesied their doom.
Her uncle took a different view. He asked her if she would open her mind and take a bit of advice from him. She listened but was resistant at first. He wasn't telling her how horrible the dates in her life had been. She wanted to hang up on him. He remained patient until she seemed willing to listen to him again. This family member had ben around and had a fair knowledge of the dating scene. He explained to her that when a young woman has that little attractive physical appearance , many males would pursue her. And the responsibility would be hers to decide what she wanted in her love life. He also advised that if she sets a goal outside of dating, then someone may pop up who is genuinely interested in her for who she has chosen to become. She interrupted by saying that all her dates seemed passionately interested in her. Her uncle corrected her that not that they were but she, when approached gave the signal that she was available. She became silent. He advised her to pause her dating for a while. She reluctantly agreed. He concluded that she wasn't silly for thinking a certain way at that point in her life, but now that she has learned a lesson she can act differently, and perhaps go on to advise another girl with the experience she has had. © Wallace Paul.
