SHORT STORY
She was distraught. Ten years of being together was over. She experienced that knife stabbing her in her back and protruding through her stomach. He suddenly told her he could no longer be with her, but confessed he still loved her. She was totally confused. Lots of questions raced through her mind. Was there another in his life? Did he not find her attractive any longer? Yes, he met her when she was 23, and ten years had passed. Was she too old for him? He was 45.
The young woman visited her doctor and explained the mental anguish she was experiencing. He prescribed some medication and recommended one week away from work. She requested one month but the doctor advised that she return after one week. She protested, cried, pleaded, but the medical practitioner encouraged her to be a bit patient.
One week was over. She promptly returned to the medical facility. She looked worse for wear this time. The doctor immediately contacted a mental health specialist and arranged for her visit there the same day. He mother was contacted and she was admitted to the new facility for observation. Two therapist and a battery of nurses attended to her, round the clock. Her lover never called.
Two weeks of mental health care, seemed to have alleviated her trauma, somewhat. She was discharged and had a weekly clinic appointment. She tried to focus on things that would help her melancholy, but found few. A nurse at the facility has shared some literature with her on how to manage he medical condition. She hardly read any. Her thoughts were more on the deception of her lover. His sudden abandonment. That was cruel, she thought.
One evening there was a surprise phone call. Her lover was on the line. He apologized to her for the pain she had experienced. He also told her that he was aware that she was hospitalized and faced severe dangers of getting worse. He asked her to try and see things from his point of view. Her lover explained that though he felt that strong love for her and wished that they could still be together, he made the decision to no longer cheat on his wife. He further explained that when they got together, she felt she could handle being in a relationship with a married lover. He also did not look at the long term consequences. He accepts blame as well his decision. She was still not recovered from his explanations. However, she explained that she held no hatred in her heart for him and wished him and his family the best for the future. © Wallace Paul, January 2025
