Yes, it's that big day when families gather around that big table or whatever method they choose to reconnect with their loved ones and even some close friends. The turkey, the pies, the special beverages, the gossips, and grandma, or grandpa getting to meet new additions to the family tree.
Then there's little Johnny , overeating or spilling the drink and not showing any remorse. The scolding of grandma only made things worse. Mom threatening not to have Johnny at another Thanksgiving gathering. Johnny was not connecting with the whole event, except the food. He reclines on a sofa, pouting and hoping that the whole thing would be over soon. He then picks up his favorite toy-- an ambulance- and turns on the siren. The lad is delighted at the sound it makes and turns up the volume to the max. The machine raced, and zoomed, and zipped, causing feet to lift and sprawl, and collide, and hurt.
Grandma signal grandpa away from the gathering and complains about Johnny's appalling behavior. She sweats as she remonstrates to grandpa about Johnny's antics. Grandpa listens but does not react. Grandma becomes furious. Grandpa smiles. The matriarch is even more upset and threatens to call off the whole event and send Johnny packing to his room. Grandpa hugs her and quietly told her he would speak to Johnny. Grandma hastens him to have it done. Grandpa turns and smiles with Johnny. The boy reciprocates and asks grandpa if he likes his toy. His grandpa nods in approval. Johnny hugs grandpa around his feet and takes him on the patio.
Grandma looks nervously at them. The sirens becomes silent. Grandpa was laughing heartily with the kid. They chat for a while. Johnny puts his toy in the room. Grandpa knows in his heart that Johnny is only a boy. And that that gender has little patience for such lengthy events. The remainder of the day is enjoyed by everyone. © Wallace Paul October 2024
