Short story
She was rich, and knew no other existence. Her father, Robert Finn, was a manager of a big company, a name she never bothered to ask. Her parents took care of all of her needs. Her mother was a homemaker. She always ensured that her daughter, now 21 and 12 year-old brother wore the finest clothing when they attended the private school they were enrolled in. The church they visited every Sunday was a massive structure that seemed to have been built in the Michelangelo era.
Her father was always dapper, whether he attended church or was geared for work. His suits added to that aura of immaculacy he strove to passionately exude. Dad drove a Mercedes Benz most of the times but had a fleet of some of the finest models in his garage. Recently, he gave her the keys to one of the cars from his fleet. The girl was proud of her parents as she was old enough to understand the ethics they taught her. Honesty and integrity were the core principles her parents stressed. That quality she had now inculcated.
Mom took over the task of taking her children to school and church as dad had left for a business trip. The girl had grown accustomed to her dad leaving home from time to time to go on business trips. This time dad had gone for one year now. Mom ensured she kept closer to her children in their father's absence. They watched mostly Disney channels and a few sporting events. As a mother she didn't want her children to be exposed to the mostly negative stories on the news channels.
The girl felt a bit bored one evening when her mom had retired to bed early. Her brother was in his room playing with his Xbox. She scrolled the television channels and unwarily stopped at WKXZ where the news was in progress. "Breaking news, the FBI has arrested mob boss, Robert Finn also known as "Chinki" who is wanted for the killing of 10 people." She saw a man that resembled her dad. When the broadcaster said Robert Finn again, she ran to her mother's room and called her to the television. "Mom look, they made a mistake, not my dad!" Her mom broke down and cried uncontrollably. "Mom that's not the job my dad does!" she cried.
"Honey, I have to admit that that is your dad", mom explained. The girl screamed, " I don't believe it. I don't believe I was lied to all these years. I'm going to die." She ran to her room and locked herself in.
When she emerged an hour later, she was dressed in a pair of jeans, a tank top and her favorite sneakers with a duffel bag in her hand. Her mother rushed to her. "Where are you going my dear?" She didn't answer. The girl made her way to the door. "Please honey, I understand how you feel. Just tell me when you're coming back." She was still mute. The girl shut the door behind her and left.
