Short Story
The moonlight spread it's huge face across the ocean. The eye-popping 25-deck cruise liner navigated its way into port. Most passengers were anxious to disembark to escape the tempestuous sea, 40 nautical miles ago.
The 8,000 guest and 2,500 crew, baulked at the thought that this was going to be Titanic 2. It was the year, 2023 There were no icebergs, no reversing of the boat's engine, no rescue boats thrown ashore. But cruise liner, Smooth Cruise, was challenged to live up to its name. Fifteen-foot waves lashed the bow. It's companions slammed the port and the starboard as if they were on a killing mission. Tables and chairs clashed and banged and crashed. Light bulbs in the cabins and on the balconies shone and were gone and then shone again. Smooth Cruise danced reluctantly, but rallied and quickly played her own music.
Eighty-year old grandma was on her maiden voyage. Her son along with his wife and 12 year-old granddaughter stayed in one cabin. Grandma and Blake, her , Portuguese Water Dog had their own cabin. Though the storm subsided grandma had not regained her composure. Her pet was near her as her frail hands couldn't cuddled her him, as they both sought refuge under the duvet covers. She was so happy to have him as most cruise liners won't allow pets.
Her granddaughter broke ranks from her parents' room and rushed to see grandma. The sea was calmer now. The little girl carefully removed the cover from grandma's face. Grandma seemed to be asleep. "Grandma, grandma, wake up, wake up" she cried. Her grandma slowly opened her eyes, let out a deep sigh and hugged her granddaughter. Grandma's eyes watered, and so did her granddaughter's.
Passengers quickly disembarked the ship. Grandma was later joined by her son and his wife and they gathered their luggage to depart. Everyone seemed to have forgotten Blake who lay silent with all the noise around him. "Oh my, Blake how could we go and leave you here?" exclaimed grandma.
"Let's go Blakey", urged grandma.
"He must be terrified after that storm", said grandma. Her granddaughter tried to help her to get Blake out of bed. but he wouldn't budge. A crew member entered the room as the party seemed to delay their exist. He skook Blake and he was unresponsive. Blake was dead. © Wallace Paul February 2024.
