VINTAGE
There is something about the past that seems to intrigue us. A tugging in our hearts that want to return to how it used to be. It's as if we are straddled in the now, with one leg staying in the past and the other in the future. We don't want abandon the present with all its modernity but we do reminisce on how we lived back then.
In all fairness, we do not long for the bitterness nor the disappointment, but somehow attribute beauty, simplicity and serenity to many aspects of the past. Hearing a song from our childhood or adolescent years can awaken that euphoria that diminishes the fear or uncertainty we might be feeling.
The picture of an old house beside a river, a cow grazing in a savannah, water flowing in a stream or an automobile from the past, all titillate our imagination. Ancient structures, renaissance paintings or even a Shakespeare play never fail to amaze us. Then again ; why not? As Shakespeare famously said in one of his plays, "if music be the food of love, play on". If the display of a classic from the past adds mystique to our lives, give me more. Let vintage forever be the wine that sooths our sorrow.(Wallace Paul)
