Father's Day

To all the men who have made sacrifices and hardly complained-hats off to you.

While it is true that most men do not make a fuss about too many things, sometimes we take them for granted.
For centuries men worked in oilfields, caves, tunnels, towering buildings, at sea, in the jungle and many other places where they were exposed to serious physical dangers. And very often they were away from their homes where they did not have the opportunity to be close to their children. We salute you dads.

This week we continue to recognize the sterling contribution made to American culture by African American musicians

Considered by many as the father of Rock and Roll music. Chuck Berry's inimitable style thrilled millions of Americans and others throughout his long career .An American Gem.

That husky voice that interchanged into a falsetto and a sweet adlib, that evoked joy and somberness in many of us for decades. "Hit The Road Jack." , "America The Beautiful." and many more.

Marian Anderson -opera singer. She dared to get into a genre that was almost exclusively for whites singers and performed with class.

Florence Price was a a classical composer, pianist, organist and music teacher. Some of her compositions are:

*The Old Boatman

Yes, if you saw the epic movie " The Sting" with Robert Redford and Paul Newman, then you had the opportunity to hear this classical piece by Scott Joplin, "The Entertainer". Joplin also composed:

Mary Lou Williams was a jazz pianist, composer, arranger, and singer. She wrote hundreds of compositions and arrangements and recorded more than one hundred songs.

Marriage customs are as varied as there are cultures around the world. Within one country there can be a plethora of practices especially is there is tribalism or even in a cosmopolitan society.
In some parts of China, when the groom comes to fetch his bride, he is confronted by a barrage bridesmaids blocking his entrance. They demand red envelopes of money and he is forced to sing and generally teased to prove his love.

This one sounds a bit weird.
One French tradition is, on the wedding day, guests fill a toilet bowl with all the leftovers, which were previously deemed delicious, and mix them with alcohol and everything they desire. The couple is then obliged to finish the bowl in order to build up strength for the taxing night

Kenya
In the Maasai culture in Kenya, families choose your spouse. One week prior to the wedding, families meet to discuss and agree on what the groom's family will exchange for his bride.
On the wedding day a Maasai bride-to-be will have her head shaved and rubbed with lamb fat and oil. Her father then proceeds to bless the couple by spitting on his daughter's head and breast for good luck .

U.S.A.
Some Southern states in the the United States of America, have a tradition of burying a bottle of bourbon upside down close to or at the place they will wed , one month ahead of the big day. They do this to ward off rain on the day.
However, rain or shine, the couple digs up the bottle and share the contents with the guests and family.

Hepatitis C

This is a liver infection caused by the hepatitis C virus, called HCV. Most often it spreads when you come into contact with blood from an infected person.
Hepatitis C can cause serious problems like liver failure, cirrhosis (scarring of the liver), and liver cancer. There's no vaccine for hepatitis C. That's why screenings from your doctor are important. That way, you'll know if you're at greater risk of an infection.
Your chances of hepatitis C can go up if:
You're a baby boomer. About 75% of the people infected with hepatitis C in the U.S. were born between 1945 and 1965. If you're in this group, your chances of getting hepatitis C is at least five times greater than people of any other age. There are many theories as to why this is true, but it's most likely because medical procedures like blood transfusions weren't as safe back then. The hepatitis C screening weren't as common then.
Your mother was infected. If your mother had had hepatitis C infection, there's a chance you have one too. According to the CDC, about 6 % of babies born to infected mothers will get hepatitis C. A pregnant woman who has HCV antibodies but no active virus likely won't spread the virus to her baby. But if she has a high viral overload, there's a greater chance she'll pass on the virus to her child.
You've had exposure to blood or body fluids. Health care workers and anyone who deals with blood and needles on a regular basis have a higher chance of getting hepatitis C due to the potential for accidents like needle-stick injuries.
You've gotten transfusions or transplants. You're at a greater risk of hepatitis C if you received an organ transplant or blood transfusion before July 1992. Your chances are also higher if you had clotting factor concentrates made for you before 1997. These days blood supply is highly screened.
You shared certain personal items. Sharing things like razors, nail clippers, and toothbrushes raises the odds that you'll get hepatitis C, since those items might come into contact with infected blood.
You had a tattoo or piercing in an unclean environment. If the needle used wasn't sterile or the room wasn't clean, infected blood can spread from one person to another.
You have HIV. Hepatitis C and HIV in many of the same ways- including blood products, unsafe drug use, and sex- many people have both viruses.
You had long-term hemodialysis. When you've had your blood filtered by a machine for a long time because your kidneys weren't working, it's possible that blood from an infected person could get on the surfaces or machine equipment and then spread to other people .
You're Black. Black Americans have a higher rate of infection of hepatitis C and a higher rate of death from this disease. Those rates are dropping with better diagnosis.
