Short Story
He sat in his recliner as he watched his four kids  play in the living room. His 15 year-old daughter was preoccupied with her phone scanning to find the latest app. His second kid at 12 was checking out video games on her ipad. The last two siblings, 10 and 8 watched TV and checking the weather reports. They were eager to go outside and play baseball. The dark clouds and thunderstorms, and pounding rain spoiled the day for the boys.
He turned to the small table next to him searching for something interesting to read. There he kept the latest motivational books he bought or the magazines he had subscribed to. He found a book he thought would put him in the frame of mind he desired at that time. The book lifted his spirit for a few minutes. But he stopped as the memories of his  deceased wife sprang to his mind. She died when the last kid was two. He hardly thought of marrying again especially since his family was big and he didn't think they wanted to see another woman around the home. So, he settled on remaining their single parent.
As the CEO of a major company he owned, he had to skillfully control his schedules. Holding meetings with staff,  engaging other business associates, and being present for significant events in his kids life challenged him. He never complained. In fact,  he found joy in knowing that he could have provided a good atmosphere for his kids to grow up in and also being able to run his business successfully.
The rain subsided and the boys ran outside even though the lawns were damp. They donned their baseball gear and pitched and swung to glory. Their father peaked through his window and felt nothing but pride as he watched his kids, though muddied, having fun.
The next day was Father's Day. he got out of bed a bit late. He didn't worry much about breakfast as he knew his daughters had developed the skill at preparing that meal. The boys knocked at his room and invited him out. When he emerged he saw a huge box gift-wrapped at the entrance. Some of the kids urged him to open it. He hesitantly complied. Out sprang his youngest son wishing him a happy Father's Day. His eldest daughter told him that if they all could have have fitted in the box, they would have done so. She also added that she wanted him to know that they are all his present for this special day. He sobbed. The kids then invited him for breakfast. They ate and licked their lips and  fingers  and smiled. © Wallace Paul June 2024.

What About Embracing Gravel Gardens?
Yeah, we know, you are accustomed to purchasing mulch and other potting products when you tend to your garden. But making use of mostly natural soil is an idea that has been around for ages. A gardener possesses two main quality, that is being resilient and creative. With unpredictable climate change, resilience and creativity have to be employed. You may be required to think outside the box. So these are some of the things that you need to consider.
* Enhance Your Garden with Edimentals

Edimental plants are both edible and ornamental-- are beautiful and easy to grow your own food in your garden, whatever the size. Edimental plants are easier to care for than traditional vegetables. with fruiting time throughout the year rather than all at once.

* Explore Naturalist Planting and The New Perennial Movement.
Picture
Originating in the Netherlands in the 1980s, the New Perennial Movement is finally becoming a mainstream design aesthetic.
It's a slightly wilder, softer aesthetic , neither manicured nor neglected, but one that takes its cue from nature. It's a garden filled with drifts of plants and grasses that appear to have naturally re-seeded  themselves in place, though in reality are carefully placed and chosen. The focus is on diversity of plants that blends with nature.
* Preserve Every Drop of Eco-Friendly Rain Gardens

Picture
With drought an occurrence in many regions, rain gardens have soared in popularity as a method of slowing down the rain water and irrigation, keeping every last drop of precious water on site and out of the street's storm drains. It also minimizes roof and driveway pollutants from rain runoffs, as the roots of  the plants slowly filter the water.
* You Learn To Love Bugs (Even Those That Munch!)

Picture
While we don't want  full-blown infestations destroying our gardens, a shift in perspective can result in a more sustainable garden.
There are some bugs that will perpetually be on the naughty list, but there has been a fundamental shift, on how we perceive   the vast majority of bugs, even those that make us squirm. The Royal Horticultural Society recently de-classified slugs and snails as pests.
* Adapt And Grow With A changing Climate

Picture
We must adapt to weather rapidly becoming hotter/colder/wetter/drier than ever before, forcing us to re-evaluate the garden's roles in our lives. Many are walking a tightrope between the desire to create stunning aesthetic innovative breeders, designers, and gardeners who focus on sustainable beauty, and increased native plant selections available in nurseries.
*Create Unique Outdoor Spaces

Picture
With more people more working out of their homes, gardens are being transformed into hard-working spaces for the entire family. Of course outdoor cooking and dining remain one of the top requests, when designing a garden. But spaces devoted to other aspects of everyday living are a growing demand.
* Embrace Gravel Gardens For Low -Maintenance Beauty
Picture
With temperatures trending hotter and drier, than ever before,  gardeners are re-evaluating their plant choices, planting methods, and dependency on water to create thriving gardens. Gravel gardens tick all the boxes of a sustainable, low-water garden.
A gravel garden is a low -water, low- maintenance garden bed primarily consisting of gravel instead of soil, with carefully chosen plants throughout. Gravel of a uniform size is evenly spread over the existing ground to depth of 4-6 inches. The root -ball base of 3-to 4-5 inch potted plant is then placed near to the top of the ground and surrounded with gravels. Placing the root-ball base near the ground encourages the root to grow deep down, resulting in a much hardier plant that can withstand drought.
* Rediscover the Beauty of Biodiversity of Stumpery Gardens

Picture
While once a Victorian fad to designed to show off fern collections, stumpies are making a comeback. Only the focus isn't on plant collections but on creature wildlife sanctuaries while showcasing shade-loving plants.
