Planting and Growing Garlic
Garlic is a cool-- weather perennial plant commonly planted in the cool of autumn or early spring. Typically 4--6 weeks before the ground freezes. By that time many summer crops have been harvested, leaving some some free garden space.

If you're replanting garlic from your own stock, choose the biggest and best from your summer's harvest. Work in 1-2 inches of well rotted compost. Aim for a slightly acid to neutral soil pH(6.0-7.0). Avoid areas where alliums(like onions) grew in the previous season.
Picture
Separate garlic bulbs into individual cloves, leaving the papery layer intact.
Dig holes 2- inches deep, spacing them 4--6 inches apart
Plant cloves with the pointy tip facing up and the basal/root end down

Picture
Cover with 3--4 inches of  straw mulch to prevent heaving during freezing temperatures. Water periodically during the winter and spring.
Garlic will grow slowly over nine months. Harvest when leaves turn brown and fall over( usually mid-summer to summer)

Remember, garlic is toxic to animals ,so keep it away from pets.

Brain - Boosting Beverages.
So, you feel a bit lethargic, jet-lagged, worn etc. Well, there are some beverages that can give you that kick and send you to energy zone in your brain and subsequently other parts of your body. Here are some.
Picture
Coffee
If you can't get through the morning without a java jolt, you're not alone.
About 75% of coffee drinkers are coffee drinkers, and half say they drink it daily. The caffeine in coffee does really make you more alert. A cup of Joe can also help you concentrate and boost your mood when you've got the Monday blues. Plus coffee drinkers may have a lower risk of  stroke and Alzheimer's disease

Picture
Green Tea
If you're not a coffee drinker , this nutty--flavored beverage is another way to get your caffeine. Like coffee, tea make you feel more alert. It may help you tune out distractions like a noisy co-worker in the next cube, too. There is also evidence that the green stuff improves memory and attention. Experts can't point to one component that makes these leaves so brain healthy. It's likely the blend of healthy plant chemicals it contains.
Picture
Berry Juices
Throw some blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, and strawberries into a juicer or blend them into your favorite smoothie. However you drink them, berries are brain food. They're high in antioxidants that protect your cells from damage. The little fruits are also a good source of plant chemicals like anthocyanins that support healthy memory. Just watch out for store-bought juices. They can be high in sugar.

Picture
Kombucha
Fans of this fizzy fermented drink claim it helps with everything from high blood pressure, to diabetes , and cancer. Kombucha is a mixture of black tea, sugar, bacteria, and yeast. Labels say these healthy germs boost immunity and bring down inflammation, though there isn't much evidence to support this claim. But beware: if you don't prepare this sour tea right and store it well in a fridge, you could drink some bad germs along with the good.

Picture
Green Smoothie
Just one serving of greens decline a day can slow down mental decline as you age, research finds. Spinach, kale, and collard greens are rich in brain-friendly nutrients like, folate and lutein. Blend 2 ounces of greens with berries, a banana, and ice for a rich nutritious treat that's also loaded with vitamins A and C.
Picture
Turmeric Tea
This yellow spice is a main ingredient in curry, and it adds an earthy flavor to tea. Turmeric has been part of Chinese and Indian medicine for centuries. Thanks to its anti-inflammatory  properties, turmeric is useful for skin, joint, and digestive issues. Researchers are now looking into its protective effects on the brain and whether it might improve memory and slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease.

Picture
Beetroot Juice
Beets are a root vegetable. Their juice is high in antioxidants that protect against damaging substances in the body called free radicals. It also has nitrates that relax blood vessels and may help to reduce high blood pressure-- a risk for stroke and dementia. Plus this sweet and earthy juice helps fight fatigue.

Picture
Ginseng Tea
This root has been a staple in traditional medicine for centuries. It may also increase stamina, boost concentration , and improve memory.

Picture
Hot Chocolate
Cocoa is rich in flavanols, plant-based substances that help improve attention, processing , and memory. A cup of this brew might also protect against mental decline, especially in people who are at higher risk of dementia. Stick to dark chocolate which has more flavanols than milk or white.

Picture
Lemon Water
Your whole body needs water -- including your brain. When you're dehydrated your mental function suffers. Water makes up 75% of your brain's volume and acts as a natural shock absorber. Add a squeeze of lemon to your water for both flavor and nutrition. Lemon has plant nutrients that protect your cells from damage. Plus, some people find that its scent improves their mood.

A priest is being chased  through the woods by a hungry lion.
As the priest is running he makes an impassioned plea to God: Oh please God in your infinite wisdom and mercy, turn this beast into a good Christian!
Before he can get another word out, he trips and goes sprawling over a log.
The lion catches up and approach the terrified priest. Rising up on its hind leg, it puts its paws together  and says
"Lord, thank you for this meal that I'm about to receive."

The design is complete with whiskers and circular windows for eyes. Students enter the school through the mouth of the cat. And there is one more purr-fect feature that the school has; the cat's tail found at the back of the building doubles as a slide.

Short Story
His trip to the gym is something he tries never to miss.  Three time a week and two hours of workout is adequate for him.  At 40 he started to take care of his health more as he saw saw some of his buddies lose the battle of staying in shape, and surrendered to a paunch. That he didn't admire. His wife gave him all the support and promised one day to join him at his workouts.
It's been a year since he is on this journey. He has endeavored to continue until such time as his body informs him otherwise. Each stay at the gym sees at least 15 to twenty people getting in shape. He hardly pays much mind to those around him except for a few he sees regularly. He would briefly acknowledge their presence and go his way. It is hard to keep up with the faces as some people would spend two, to six months and not return. But she is a constant. She looks to be about 25. Her shapely figure is the epitome of  a 10. He tries not to look much in her corner. He carefully secures himself in a spot that would ensure few encounters with her. Or, so he thought.
It was an early Saturday morning. The gym had just a few patrons at that time. She was there. He started his routine and planned to get out a little earlier than usual. "Excuse me Sir," came from her corner. He ignored it as he wasn't the only male around. "The call came again. He looked up a saw her beckoning him to her corner. He hurried over. She complained that she was uncertain about a particular maneuver on one of the machines. She said she really wanted to learn it. The procedure was simple but he showed her anyway. She flattered him by pretending what he just showed her was amazing. He picked up on the vibes and attempted return to his corner.  She stopped him by saying she didn't introduce herself properly to him. She offered her name. He did not reciprocate. She pretended as if he had told her his name was Johnny. He said no and corrected it to Barry.
He stepped away again when she offered her telephone number. Barry was hesitant but eventually returned his. He left the gym alone.
Sunday morning at 7, Barry and his wife were still in bed. His phone rang. It was her. Barry did not answer. His wife was puzzled. The phone rang again. Barry snatched the phone, jumped out of bed, stepped out of the room and answered. He questioned why she was calling him at that hour of the morning, disturbing him and his wife. She complained that he never told her he was married. He responded that he hardly even know her to disclose that information. He abruptly  ended the call. He wife joined him in the hallway. She asked who it was. He responded that he didn't know the person well. She was puzzled. He hugged her and and said he would in explain. She cautiously accepted.©  Wallace Paul July 2024.
